What is Silicone Oil?

Silicone oil, specifically polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), is a hydrophobic linear synthetic polymer with silicon-oxygen (Si-O) units and organic side chains. It exhibits properties like high thermal stability, electrical insulation, water repulsion, anti-adhesive characteristics, biocompatibility, and good mechanical properties

Silicone oil or siloxane

Silicone oil refers to any hydrophobic linear synthetic polymers consisting of repetitive silicon-oxygen (Si-O) units and organic side chains. One of the simplest and most widely used silicone oil is polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).

Properties of silicone oils (PDMS)

Silicone oils and polydimethylsiloxane are colorless liquid substances existing in various viscosity in different applications. They have interesting properties such as high thermal stability, electrical insulation, water repulsion, anti-adhesive characteristics, biocompatibility, and good mechanical properties that make them useful in different industries. Silicone oils possess physiological inertia, good chemical stability, are odorless, non-toxic, and non-irritating to the skin. The viscosity range of silicone oils is 1 to 1000000 centistokes (cSt). Increasing the molecular weight of silicone oil leads to longer polymer chains and higher viscosity. In the Sinoxe company, there are dimethylsiloxanes with two different viscosities: 350cSt and 1000cSt.

Application of silicone oils in different industries

Silicone oils are widely used as anti-foam agents, lubricants, and heat transfer fluids in different industries.

Silicone oil in medicine

In the medical field, silicone oil is used as a substitute for vitreous fluid to treat difficult cases of retinal detachment.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in cosmetics

Silicone oils are a high-quality raw material of cosmetics, with physiological inertia and good chemical stability, odorless, non-toxic, non-irritating to the skin. They are used in beauty products, deodorants, antiperspirants, and skin and hair care products.

Siloxane in automotive

Incorporating small amounts of silicone oil into wax oil-in-water emulsion compositions has been found to create polishes that give painted or lacquered metal surfaces a high degree of luster and a pleasing appearance. Silicone oil is an excellent choice for enhancing the shine and appearance of your vehicle’s paint.

Silicone oil in silicone products

Silicone oil, such as polydimethylsiloxane, is utilized to enhance the fluidity, softness, flexibility, and elasticity of silicone-based products.

Silicone oils in petroleum

In petroleum processing, silicone oils are used as antifoam agents. Silicone oils are also commonly used as anti-foam agents in the petroleum industry.

Chemical structure of PDMS

The chemical structure of PDMS contains a siloxane chain with side chains of dimethyl groups.
